Coachwork & History

This particular body was originally fitted to the New Phantom chassis ‘31HC’, commissioned in 1929 by Captain J.F.C. Kruse, who famously hired Amherst Villiers (known for his work on the Blower Bentley and Bluebird) to supercharge the car—making ‘31HC’ the only supercharged Rolls-Royce of its kind at the time. In 1932, this custom body was removed and later re-bodied onto 121XJ, giving this example a unique and rich dual provenance.

Initially delivered as a limousine by Thrupp & Maberly to George Heath Ltd of Birmingham via Jack Barclay, it was later acquired by Hodgson & Sons Ltd, Undertakers, in 1942.
